Planetary Ball Mill

High-Efficiency Planetary Grinding System for Fine, Wet, Dry & Nano-Scale Material Processing

Athena Instruments introduces the AIPL Series Planetary Ball Mill, a robust and high-efficiency grinding system designed for the crushing, mixing, homogenization, colloid grinding, mechanical alloying, and mechanochemistry of laboratory and production-development samples. Designed as a medium-production planetary ball mill, the system combines high centrifugal forces with impact and friction to achieve efficient size reduction with short grinding times across a wide range of soft, hard, brittle, and fibrous materials.

Featuring four grinding stations, variable-speed operation, programmable grinding modes, and support for dry, wet, vacuum, and atmosphere-protected grinding, the AIPL Series provides flexible processing for research institutions, universities, and industrial laboratories. Available in AIPL-0.4L, AIPL-1L, AIPL-2L, and AIPL-4L configurations, the series supports different grinding-jar capacities and processing requirements, with wet grinding suitable for fine and nano-scale particle-size reduction.

Key Features

High-Energy Planetary Grinding

High centrifugal forces generated by planetary movement provide effective interaction between impact and friction forces for efficient material size reduction.
Four-Station Processing
Four grinding stations allow up to four sample materials to be processed simultaneously, supporting efficient parallel sample preparation.

Wide Grinding Capability

Supports dry grinding, wet grinding, vacuum grinding, and atmosphere-protected grinding for different material-processing requirements.
Fine & Nano-Scale Grinding
Wet grinding can be used to obtain particle sizes below 5 µm, while the catalogue describes nano-scale grinding of 100 nm or less under suitable wet-grinding conditions.
Programmable Operation
Provides three operating modes, storage for up to 15 SOPs/plans, and adjustable run/stop time from 0–9999 minutes.
Integrated Safety System
The machine stops when the lid is opened and cannot start with the cover open. A self-acting lock helps prevent the grinding jar from loosening during operation.

Applications

Material Crushing & Size Reduction
Suitable for processing soft, hard, brittle, and fibrous materials into finer particle sizes.
Mixing & Homogenization
Used for uniform mixing and homogenization of different sample materials.

Mechanical Alloying & Mechanochemistry

Suitable for mechanical alloying and mechanochemical processing in research and development laboratories.
Research & Industrial Development
Ideal for scientific institutions, universities, and corporate laboratories for experimental studies, process development, and verification of production feasibility.

Additional Technical Highlights

Planetary Grinding Mechanism

The grinding jars are eccentrically positioned on the sun wheel. The sun wheel and grinding jars rotate in opposite directions at a 1:2 ratio, creating superimposed rotational movement and Coriolis forces for high-energy grinding.
